She plans on fighting for our country, but how does she combat her day-to-day life? Linda Hayner ‘24 is a student at Delta High School. Hayner occupies her time with her education, JROTC, and her job. While many people know Hayner, there aren’t that many people who understand how she balances her life. It may be more simple than one might think.
“I just like to keep myself calm. I’m definitely finding coping mechanisms for when I am stressed, like communicating how I’m feeling to my friends and family,” said Hayner.
Hayner’s daily life as a student is not as easy as it appears. She challenges every day using a “tunnel vision” method. In doing this, Hayner has maintained a current GPA of 3.93. “When I’m in one class for 50 minutes and I pay attention to just that one class, once I get to the next class, I’m not too worried about what the other class was,” said Hayner.
Just like most people, Hayner also forgets a lot of things throughout the day. “I’ll have notes written on my hand throughout the day because if I don’t write it down, I’ll forget,” said Hayner.
As a member of the JROTC program, Hayner has an interest in the Army and even got a high ASVAB score. She plans on being a combat medic and getting her nursing degree while enlisted. Hayner’s main reason for joining JROTC is the leadership aspect and she even aspires to be like Major Hernandez and Chief Clark.
“I definitely do not think I would have made the decision to go join the Army after high school if I did not meet them. Just being in JROTC in general, kind of led me in that leadership direction of going into the army. I just think it’ll be a good opportunity to increase those aspects of my life and be that kind of person, like Chief and Major,” said Hayner.
When Hayner isn’t in school, she works at Pete Tarr Insurance as an office assistant. She has worked there for almost three years and has been educated on the many factors that go into insurance. “I mostly scan papers and answer the phone, but I’ve definitely learned a lot about insurance and how it works,” said Hayner.
What drives her to work so hard? Hayner has family and friends who all have high standards for her. A key part of having such academic success is that kind of support system.
“My parents have always set high expectations for me and my siblings. So I think that’s kind of a personal interest to meet and beat their expectations,” said Hayner.
