College can be scary, especially with all the debt that can follow. What if there is a way that most of that debt or even all of that debt could be eliminated with a local scholarship here at DHS? Danielle Lopez, math teacher and speech coach at DHS, offers a scholarship for you to apply for and possibly get, to help you go into college debt-free.
Applying for this scholarship could really help students avoid loan debt in the future by watching a documentary called Borrowed Future and how to avoid it. You could possibly end college without student loans.
“So my husband and I feel strongly that student loans are not helpful to kids. They harm kids more than they help and [students] don’t really know too much about it. So our scholarship is educating kids on the dangers of student loans by watching a documentary called Borrowed Future, and I feel bad because by the time they’re seniors it’s kind of too late and I wish they could’ve seen it sooner,” said Lopez.
Even though the scholarship offers 2,500 dollars and renewable up to 10 thousand dollars, a senior would still need to do other things to make money and do as much as they can to avoid debt.
“The scholarship is up to 2,500 dollars but is renewable up to 10 thousand dollars. We award the kids who are doing the most to go to school without debt. The ideal candidate would be somebody who’s won some money, or already has money set aside and it’s just short of having it fully funded. After a candidate is selected, then hopefully they go through the whole school with their degree and have no debt,” said Lopez.
