Have you ever wondered if there is a dress code for the homecoming dance? Or even just the dress code at school? Many girls have. Is it similar to the one at school? Is it the same? More strict, less?
Rosie Johnson, Delta High School Principal, said, “We haven’t had issues in several years, but during prom, several years back, we had to send quite a few students home.”
Dress code in general has always been an issue at Delta High.
Junior Jyssidia Moralez said, “ I believe sometimes teachers take the dress code too far. I understand if a girl has her butt hanging out of her shorts, but an inch of stomach is a little far for the dress code.”
Johnson mentions how they usually won’t send girls home on homecoming since it is a school dance. She said she asks the girls if they have anything else to wear.
“We usually use the same rules for dress code as homecoming. But most girls like wearing spaghetti straps so we allow that. But years ago we had girls wearing sheer dresses and you could see it all through. And we had no choice but to send them home,” said Johnson.
Getting sent home on homecoming would not be a fun experience, but girls have been great the last few years for dress code at dances.
“We have also had issues with boys at prom. They would take off their shirts and just wear their bow ties, like play bunny boys. We would just simply ask them to put their shirts back on,” said Johnson.
Sophomore Mathew Brewer said he thinks that if boys take their shirts off and don’t get in trouble, some girls may get mad if they get in trouble for their dresses. The school dress code has very mixed signals regarding what is and is not fair.
“I do think boys have it a little easier for dress code reasons. They can wear the same tank tops we wear and we only get dress-coded,” Moralez said. Johnson mentioned she tries to make the dress code fair, but sometimes it’s hard. She said the girls show a lot more skin than boys, so she finds herself dress-coding them lots more.
“I just think girls need to cover up more,” Sophomore Isaac Aguilera said. Aguilera explained the dress code is pretty fair for the most part, and people just dress inappropriately and break the rules.
It’s a little bit different when students get dress-coded at school compared to at a dance. At school, they give students a T-shirt or ask them to put a hoodie on. If it’s your pants, they’ll make you change. At dances, there’s not much you can do, but go home to change.
Moralez said “I also think girls are dramatic when they get dress-coded. Just put on a hoodie and get over it.”
