The baby simulation at Delta High School gives students an experience of what it is like to be a real parent. Health class students have to change the baby, give it the bottle whenever it sleeps, and change the baby’s diaper. The simulation replicates how and why a baby cries.
The simulation, taught by the health teacher Mykayla Schmalz, is supposed to test how responsible a student can be in raising a child. Though the simulation may be difficult, it teaches students about the real-life experience of having children and how difficult it is to maintain a child overall.
Freshman Ariana Ramon was one of the students who had to work on the project. “The project overall was challenging, and I think I would become a better parent after the project,” Ramon said. “It seems pretty accurate. The crying was the worst of the whole project.” The project is supposed to be an in-and-out-of-school project, meaning that a student has to take the baby to every class and then home. Sophomore Jordan Green had been through a lot with the child, talking about how the baby kept waking him up, crying at two in the morning, and Green was unable to make the baby stop. “The project was difficult, mainly since we had to take good care of the baby, like changing the diaper or because it cries a lot,” said Green.
