The Delta High School Panther Pride Marching Band just capped off the season, bringing home second place and silver medals for the first time in 14 years. The band’s placement reflects all the long rehearsals and hard work the students put into the program.
The band competed in the Colorado Bandmasters Association 2A competition on Monday, October 28th at CSU Pueblo. Going into the competition, the band was solidly ranked third in the state for class 2A behind their competition, The Classical Academy and Montezuma-Cortez. After an exemplary prelim performance, the band took second place by .15 of a point and qualified for finals with a score of 67.650. Finishing their final performance, the band scored 70.55, the highest the band has scored in a long time.
“The band overcame any expectation I had set before. They all worked towards a common goal and achieved what we wanted. I believe the successful end of the season should be credited to the hard work the band puts in and the dedication our band directors have. There’s a saying that I think we should eradicate now because we aren’t ‘ood enough for Delta.’ We are enough to be one of the biggest competitors out of the 2A bands in Colorado,” said drum major Rebecca Gonzalez.
Starting the season at the first competition, the band scored 59.300 for their preliminary performance. At that same competition, the band’s final score was 56.400 and placed second in class 2A hanging behind their head competition, Montezuma-Cortez.
The band headed into the second competition of the season, regionals, and finished with a 64.250 and stayed in second place behind Cortez. With the regional outcome, the band was ranked third in the state for class 2A. Using the second placements from
both competitions, the band decided it wanted more and used that as fire going into the state competition.
“I was expecting to make it to the top four because our show was going very well in terms of technique and musicality, but the actual outcome of second place exceeded all my expectations,” said senior Maddison Fine.
