Christmas is filled with all types of spirit and joy during December.
We all know that Christmas is filled with joy and memories for many people worldwide. But the real question is: When does Christmas start? Some say it starts the day after Halloween; others say January 1. For people like me, the Christmas spirit begins on the first day of December.
The Christmas spirit isn’t supposed to start until later in the year for multiple reasons. One of the reasons is that Thanksgiving is skipped over too much, almost as if the holiday didn’t exist in the first place. Thanksgiving is a special time when you share your traditions with people you love and connect with them in ways you haven’t before. It’s also a classic in part of our history. Some of the first Americans had this day specifically to connect with others. But, people still celebrate other national holidays more enthusiastically than Thanksgiving. It’s also a special day for us, so it should be celebrated as much as others, like Halloween and Christmas.
Christmas is also the awakening of winter, and if you start your decorating and spirit at the beginning of November, you’re still in the midst of fall. The snow hasn’t fallen to the ground, ready for people to go sledding down places like 9th Street Hill. The leaves are still falling, and apple cider and hot tea are still taking their place in many households, including ours. But when it finally turns December, you start to bundle up and drink hot cocoa, burning your tongue just for that chocolate drink.
Even though people have a split opinion on Thanksgiving holiday-wise, there are ways you could prepare for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, bringing in the festive spirit without making it your whole wintery personality. You could create plans with your family, make Christmas lists, and even look up recipes for both holidays. So even though Christmas is wonderful, it can be treated like other holidays, even with perks.
Christmas, as we know, is a special holiday. It comes with traditions, fun, and best of all, presents. But what do you do when the festive season is coming up? Christmas is when we watch movies made for Christmas, which you can’t start watching in November. That’s part of why I start my Christmas spirit later in the year. Another reason I started to do this is because it’s been part of my family for years. We put our Christmas tree up in December, so part of me feels biased towards that practice, but the final reason that I do this is because of how my grandparents celebrate it. The thing is, they don’t. So, I take the time to celebrate Thanksgiving with them in November, rather than focusing on having Christmas come early every year.
