Since the DHS counselors are moving into the old office, the yearbook students and student media class will be moving into the counseling office. It was Principal Roseann Johnson and the district’s decision to move. Once the front office is done, then the counselors will begin to move there. Roseann Johnson said, “..we want them to be more towards the front of the building where families and students don’t have to go all the way in the back of school to get to the counseling office..”
Johnson also said how some students have come up to her in the past and asked where the counseling office was since they didn’t know it was in the back of the building.
Shawna Magtutu, school counselor, said, “..we haven’t gotten an exact date yet, but we’re waiting for the final finishing touches up front.” Magtutu said that they’re going to move up front sometime in January. “I love this space, it was specifically designed to be a counseling office, so we’re losing that wide open, very welcoming design, and all of the student workspace so there won’t be any space for students to work freely like there is now,” said Magtutu.
Magtutu said there probably wouldn’t be enough space up front since the counseling office was a bit bigger than the old office. Many agree that the counseling office is big and that it’s good for a change.
While getting others’ perspectives on the move, Areli Ayala, a yearbook student, thinks that moving classrooms will be better because she had said it’s good for change.
Ayala said, “I feel like it’s gonna be a good change for us since the room is bigger than the yearbook/student media class. But it’s gonna be different because where are they going to put the computers?”
Some others agree that moving to the counselors would be a good thing.
Celeste Ramon, a yearbook staff member, said, “ I feel like it’s going to be nicer and easier to manage and hopefully there will be places where we can interview instead of doing it in the halls.”
Ramon also mentioned where the computers are going to go. Aiden Duty, a staff podcast editor said, “..we might keep a couple of computers for our area.” Duty also said, “I also know we’re going to have a podcast studio..”
All the computers will be moved to the room and we are having a podcast studio, it’ll be in one of the other rooms in the counseling office. ‘Then what will happen to the two other rooms, what are they going to be used for?’ As some might say. Principal Johnson had talked about what would happen to the two other rooms and what they’d be used for.
Since Johnson talked about how there’s going to be a podcast studio in one of the rooms, she noted how the two other rooms will be used for speech, and Gear up. The yearbook/student media class will now be moving to the old counselor’s office while the counselors are in the old office. Since room A1 is not a classroom anymore, Johnson said that it will be used for meetings.
