When students hear the words “school trip,” many immediately think of excitement, freedom, and adventure. But when they hear “on the weekend,” and “not fully paid for,” the enthusiasm sometimes disappears.
Pro: Real-World Learning
Out-of-state trips give students a chance to explore new places, cultures, and environments that we just don’t get to experience in our local community. Whether it’s visiting historical landmarks, museums, or even conferences, these experiences make lessons come alive. Classroom learning is important, but real-world learning is unforgettable. Seeing something in person sticks with you in a way that a textbook can’t match.
Con: Cost Can Be a Barrier
One major downside is the cost. Not all students can afford travel fees, hotel costs, or meals out of pocket. Some schools offer fundraising options or financial aid, but not always. This can make trips feel unfair or even stressful for families who want their kids to go but just can’t make it work.
Pro: Social Growth and Stronger Friendships
Another major benefit is the social experience. Going on a trip with classmates builds stronger friendships and trust. Spending a weekend away helps students bond in new ways, outside of the usual class environment. You might room with someone you barely know and come back as friends. That kind of connection doesn’t happen during third-period math.
Con: Weekend Time and Exhaustion
Let’s be honest, giving up a weekend isn’t fun for everyone. School trips can be physically tiring, and coming back late Sunday only to head straight into a full school week can be tough. Not to mention, some students and teachers would rather spend their weekends resting or with their family.
Pro: Personal Growth and Independence
Traveling away from home, even just for a weekend, teaches independence. Students learn to manage time, take responsibility for their belongings, and make smart decisions without their parents nearby. That’s a skill that will help in college, future jobs, and life in general.
So… Is It Worth It?
Despite the cons, I strongly believe that the pros of out-of-state school trips win. The experience, the learning, the friendships, and the growth are all things you just can’t get sitting in a classroom or at home on the weekend. If you’re lucky enough to be offered the chance to go take it. You’ll come back with more than just photos. You’ll return with confidence, memories, and a better understanding of the world.
