TikTok was supposed to be banned a month ago… What happened? If you are not aware (or have been living under a rock), a US law was passed in April of 2024 requiring Byte Dance, the Chinese company that owns Tik Tok, to either sell Tik Tok to an American company or to cease to operate in the United States and by January it was supposed to be banned.
Though what ended up happening was at the end of Biden’s administration, he chose not to enforce the law, leaving the decision for Trump to decide. When President Trump took office, he issued executive orders extending the deadline for ByteDance to sell TikTok, first by 75 days in January and again in April 2025, citing ongoing negotiations and the app’s popularity among his political base. So, what now?
Well it’s hard to know what’s going to happen in TikTok’s future, with little information that has come out publicly about what is going on with all the negotiations, and to see if Tik Tok is going to be sold to a U.S company. What we do know is that the latest deadline for ByteDance to sell TikTok is now set for June 19, 2025. This came after the second time President Trump allowed another 75-day extension.
Negotiations are apparently going on, but things have become more complicated because of the new trade tensions that are going on between the U.S and China. ByteDance still has not confirmed any buyer, but the Chinese government says it would oppose a forced sale of TikTok.
In the meantime though, TikTok is thankfully still up and running, without any noticeable changes, but the thing the users probably don’t notice is the pressure building up behind the scenes, So for now, whether the app gets sold, banned or maybe even granted another extension, TikTok in the US is very much uncertain.
