How can students at school make their environment a better place inside and outside of school? Would it be based off their behavior? The good deeds that they do for each other? The most typical answer for this question is for students to be nice. But what does that actually look like? Freshman Kianah Miller believes that there are many different ways to be nice. Miller would know what being nice means. She shows integrity every day and has a smile on her face every day. No one could ever imagine her hurting someone’s feelings. ¨… step in when someones being bullied…¨ said freshman Miller.
If you saw someone being bullied, what would you do? The best thing to do is go help the person being bullied get out of the situation. You could ask the bully to stop politely and help the other person walk away from the situation. Maybe you could even help resolve the situation by asking what happened and try your best to help come up with a solution.
¨And just thinking about what their life is like outside of school, and like being empathetic towards them,¨
The environment would be such a better place if we would just take a step back and put ourselves in each other’s shoes. This is a big part of bullying. If we tried to understand others, we could possibly feel the way they feel and see things the way they do and understand where they are coming from. There is no reason anyone should be getting made fun of for the way they dress, walk, talk, etc. You could try to be nice; for example, good deeds like picking up trash, helping teachers out with extra work if you don’t have any of your own, giving out compliments, holding the door, befriending someone that seem a little lonely, and staying a little bit after the school day to help someone with their homework. You can also help make the environment a better place by being a positive leader. You can be a positive leader by leading by example. You never know who is watching you. They could be the ones that look up to you. For example, say someone is watching you and you do something nice for somebody else. They are going to turn right around and do the same thing. Lastly, you could make encouraging posters or positive notes. For instance, if you’re at school you could write a note on a card or something and stick it onto someone’s locker. You never know, they could be having a bad day and that one note of encouraging words could brighten up their whole day. There’s so many ways you can help to make the environment around you a better place. These are just a few. What are you going to do to make a difference?
