Some big changes are coming to DHS next year, with Derek Carlson moving from the current position as principal to being Human Resources Director at the district office. Because of that, Roseann Johnson will be promoted from the assistant principal job to principal.
One of the things that Johnson will be focused on improving is teacher practices school-wide. “[I want to] improve instructional practices with our teachers, so work on getting better at what they do in their classroom. They’re already really good at it, but I think we can always get better.”
However, the bigger challenge that Johnson will tackle is parent-teacher communication. “Another goal is [improving] communication with our families. That is something that we need to improve that we’re not very good at. We need to have some systematic ways to reach out to our families and make sure we’re communicating what we’re doing with their students and what their needs are to try and support them better,” Johnson said.
“We’re doing a lot of communication with parents here at the front office, but our teachers I feel like we need to improve that so parents know what’s going on in the classroom.”
Teachers agree that this is a system that could be improved. Kelly Ryan-Johnson, an English teacher at Delta High School said, “I think it’s okay. Most of what we consider communication is parent-teacher conferences, and the expectation is [that] teachers call home if a student has ongoing behavioral issues. I’m not sure if that is actually happening though.”
Those challenges don’t discourage Johnson. “I’m most excited to be the leader of this school. I always tell the teachers that I would have never done it if it wasn’t for the great staff that we have here…It’s a great school and we have a group of great teachers.”
