The Delta chapter of the Democratic Party announced on Tuesday that it would be formally dissolving due to chronic issues with its organization. The party has had little success in Delta County, the last county-wide elected Democrat opposed Abraham Lincoln.
One former member said, “We just can’t win. Granted, we don’t field candidates in most local elections, but I’m sure even if we did, our party would lose.”
Of the registered voters in Delta County, over 30% are independents, but the party believes the odds are stacked against it. In the 2024 election, three Delta County Republican incumbents ran without opposition, while four didn’t face an opponent from the Democratic Party.
The parties’ County Chair said, “We always assumed the strategy should be anti-effort. Voter outreach, who wants it? Our idea was that if we just did nothing while the Republicans took over local government, we could maybe field a candidate eventually.”
Instead of fielding candidates, the party members all voted unanimously to move forward with plans to buy a small building in Portland, Oregon, and run a “sustainable and equitable living cooperative.”
One Democratic party member said, “Staying in Delta County would require us to come up with an actionable policy that would improve the lives of farmers, workers, and immigrants. So, we’ve decided to leave for a place where we don’t have to worry about those people anymore.”
While researching for this story, the whole Delta Paw Print newsroom promptly fell asleep upon reading the first line of the Delta County Democratic Party Platform.
Not everyone is enthusiastic about the change. The chair of the Delta County Republican Party said, “I’ll miss the heated rivalry-style steamy romance I had with the Dems. Although I suppose a minority group relocating far away to a place they’ve never been is something all Republicans can celebrate.”
Another former Delta Democratic Party member said, “I can’t wait to go to a place where our laid-back, low effort, useless platitudes are celebrated.”
