The 25-26 basketball season has officially started. For seniors Alonzo Velasquez, JP Gallegos, Landon Hamm, and Deacon Shean, it will be at Delta High. When it comes to basketball, there are many people who love it. The school loves it when basketball is in season. The games are always full of school spirit and show the away team that we have the home advantage when it comes to shooting free throws or just shooting in general.
Delta has had plenty of wins and losses, but some of the more notable wins and losses are against Grand Junction,72-39, and against Gunnison, 63-34. “We had just played Grand Junction; we lost to them, but I thought we had played really well. We executed well, and we had just played another good team We just didn’t have some calls that had gone our way,” Coach Matt Cano said.
According to Coach Cano, some of the best shooters are Parker Velasquez, Griffin Shean, Charlie Hellman, and Aiden Grange. Some of the best defenders are Ryar Weems, Griffin Shean, Parker Velasquez, and Steven Fiscus. “My favorite thing about this year’s team is they are good kids outside of basketball, and they listen well, like when I tell them something, they usually do it, even if they need a little motivation with conditioning,” Cano said. “ I like how this team plays together They play well together as a team and everybody can always improve on their shooting and defending” The basketball team has some hard games coming up, consisting of the Coal Ridge Titans on February 6 and the Palisade Bulldogs on February 10. We have had two new games we have played, and we lost both of them against Moffat County and Aspen. We lost to Moffat County by 5 points and lost by 14 against Aspen We do have a game this Friday against Steamboat Springs, and their record is 4-11 the most recent game the Panthers lost by 21 to Moffat County.
The basketball season will unfortunately end around mid-February with their final regular-season games on February 13-14. This has been an exciting season for basketball; our overall wins and losses are 7-7. Our losses have been against really good to decent teams, which we only lost by about five points.
Our wins on the other hand, we have either won by a lot or won by more than 10 most of the time. “My favorite year progression-wise has probably been this summer during open gyms. My favorite teammate is probably Enzo Sanchez because I’m always his partner in practice and he always helps me with something because we are both point guard,” Jasiah Alvarez said.“The hardest game for me has probably been either Montrose or Fruita because they were kinda our first games when no one really expected them to be so good.”
