High school is a time of growth and change, especially for those trying to figure out who they are. For Gabe Fry, the support of teachers helped him not only with school, but also navigating life as a transgender student here at DHS.
“My history classes were the most fun just because of the teaching style and learning stuff that I’ve never learned before,” said Fry. In fact, Fry is going to UCCS to become a history teacher and planning on coming back to Delta to teach.
Being a trans student is not easy. “There have been a lot of assumptions about me being a trans student,” said Fry. “A lot of people have been kind of judgemental about me before they get to know me. But they don’t know I’m like every other student here; just trans.”
Even with the judgment, Fry still had teachers that helped support him, especially English Teacher Rob Ames and History Teacher Tonya Mackendrick. “They taught me what it takes to be a good student without pushing myself too far and they’re genuinely the best teachers I’ve ever had,” said Fry.
Fry’s advice for younger students and incoming freshmen is simple, but useful. “Don’t get yourself caught up in the stress of school, and homework, and grades, and enjoy your time because you’ll never experience this youth again.”
A song that describes Fry’s high school experience is “500 Miles” by Peter, Paul, and Mary because in a way, it describes how Fry is going away from the town he has spent many years in, all of his friends are going to be all over the place, and he is going to be ‘500 miles,’ or more, away from home.
