The Delta County School District is looking for a new school board member. While a few people were looking and interviewing, one stood out, Franny Esplin. She is interviewing along with three others on May 14 to be on the school board, the one they chose will be announced two weeks later on May 28.
Hard work, accountability, and community involvement were all seen as important aspects to Esplin while growing up on a farm in Southern Arizona, and Esplin plans to use those skills to help improve our schools.
Esplin had gone through 4-H, a hands-on learning program for youth with ages 5-18 to learn about fire safety, emergency services, and community service. She also has volunteered with her local fire department and learned the importance of stepping up and serving others. In 2007, Esplin moved to Colorado and graduated from Hotchkiss High School. She chose to build her life here because she genuinely cares for the community, and wants what’s best for its future.
Esplin is interested in a standard school board member position, and she thinks this position will be a great opportunity to get more involved and would allow her to get a solid understanding of the specifics, and ease into school board responsibilities to start. Esplin wants to be involved with decisions and initiatives that shape our school district.
“I am…eager to deepen my understanding of how the district operates at all levels. I have been consistently involved in several school and community activities. I have participated in the PTO at Garnet Mesa Elementary, served on the District Accountability Committee (DAC), and supported the DHS speech and Debate program this last year,” Esplin said.
Esplin has engaged with the schools and community of Delta, Colorado through many school programs, including the high school marching band and 8th grade continuation at the middle school in 2025. She engages with staff, students, and community members regularly, and it has provided her with a well-rounded understanding of both school operations and community needs.
“I believe meaningful progress comes from being actively involved. You can’t effectively address challenges or support positive change without a willingness to step in, engage, and do the work. Real impact requires more than standing on the sidelines, it requires commitment, participation, and a genuine investment in the outcome,” Esplin said.
If selected to become a school board member, Esplin hopes to, “…Learn the full scope of how our school district operates while serving as a strong, thoughtful voice for students, parents and guardians, staff, and community.”
Esplin hopes to do these things because of her own experiences. Esplin used to voice her frustrations, yet she had believed getting involved wouldn’t make a difference. However, after she had her oldest son, she naturally became more involved in school activities. In participating, she realized that, “stepping in and participating does give you a voice, and that voice can have a real impact.” She has become more involved with school activities since and it has felt rewarding to her. She plans to use her voice to stay engaged and contribute in ways that help move our schools and community forward.
If selected as a board member Esplin will keep the students at every decision and work with board members, staff, students, and families to support thoughtful and transparent outcomes to do what’s best for the kids.
